How to treat for Pine Bark Beetle in Houston

What is a Pine Bark Beetle?

The Pine Bark Beetle is a small insect that is known for its massive attacks on pine trees. They are attracted to trees that are experiencing high amounts of stress due to drought, flooding, neglect, etc. The Pine Bark Beetle is approximately the size of a grain of rice and bores a small hole through the bark and into the vascular layers of the pine tree. These layers allow the flow of nutrients from the roots to the canopy of the tree, like our veins and arteries. Although small, the Pine Bark Beetle attacks the tree in large numbers so that the number of boreholes in the pine can reach up to the thousands. Ultimately the vascular layer of the tree is disrupted to the point that essential nutrients are no longer able to reach the tree's foliage, and the tree dies. This can take as little as 14 days from the time the Pine Bark Beetle enters the tree. By the time you notice the infestation, it may have already been ten days or more.

How Do The Arborist of Houston Manage These Pests?

A small plug called an ArborPlug is directly inserted into a drill hole around the base of the tree. A specialized needle is inserted into the Arborplug, and the formula is injected into the vascular system of the tree. The formula is then dispersed throughout the trunk, branches, and leaf tissue. The ArborPlug keeps the injected formulation inside the tree, protects the drill hole, and remains inside the tree without causing any adverse effects. The tree begins to fight off the infestation from the inside-out and, in time, grows right over the plug.
How to get rid of Pine Bark Beetles in Houston

Why is This Method Beneficial?

Once applied, there are no chemicals that are left in the yard or air, so it is safe for your children and your pets. The treatment is highly effective and supported by proven university trials along with all of our clients who chose The Arborist of Houston to help with their Pine Bark Beetle infestation. The product used last for two years, and its long-lasting effects will ensure the safety of your trees from unwanted pests for the following years.

What Method Does NOT Work?

Spraying the Trees: Spraying a tree is only effective for pests that come in contact with the insecticide. Pine Bark Beetles are embedded deep inside the tree, so spraying would not be beneficial. Spraying will also kill desirable insects such as butterflies, honey bees, ladybugs, and others. Spraying insecticides is not legal near waterways and is toxic to native fish. It can also be exceedingly messy and will wash off during periods of rain.

What Does it Cost?

Application cost is dependent upon the amount of product used, trunk diameter, and labor for application. Contact The Arborist of Houston today to schedule your consultation by calling 281-786-4402 or you can fill out our online contact form.
